Best Small Business Tax and Bookkeeping Services in Greenville (2026)

Six Upstate firms that keep a small business's books and prepare its tax returns under one roof, and what to check before you hand over both.

Published by Elite Pro-Tax & Financial Services, which lists itself first. The other firms did not pay to appear and have no business relationship with us. They are described from their own websites; confirm services and details with each firm directly.

Most small business tax problems start in the books. A return can only be as accurate as the ledger behind it, and when bookkeeping and tax preparation sit with different people, figures get re-keyed, year-end adjustments get missed, and questions bounce between offices in the weeks before a deadline.

This list is for owners who want one provider for both jobs. Every firm below says on its own website that it offers bookkeeping or monthly accounting and business tax preparation. If you only need the books kept, our bookkeeping page explains what a monthly engagement covers. For the calendar every business in the state works to, see South Carolina tax deadlines.

How we put this list together

We included firms in the Greenville area whose own sites list both bookkeeping and business tax work. When comparing combined services, look at:

  • Entity coverage: can they prepare the return your business actually files, whether a Schedule C, partnership return or S corporation return?
  • Year-round contact: does the relationship continue between filing seasons, including estimated payments and planning?
  • Payroll: are quarterly payroll returns and year-end W-2s and 1099s part of the package or a separate engagement?
  • Formation and elections: can they help when you form an entity or consider an S corporation election?
  • Problem resolution: what happens if a notice arrives, and who actually responds to the IRS or SCDOR?

Why one provider for books and taxes

When the person closing your books also prepares your return, several things get easier. Depreciation entries match the return. Payroll figures on the W-2s tie to the ledger. Owner draws, distributions and shareholder loans are classified correctly all year instead of being sorted out in March. And quarterly estimated tax payments can be based on actual year-to-date profit rather than a guess.

The trade-off is concentration: one firm holds everything. Ask how they back up your data, who covers when your contact is out, and how you get your files if you ever leave.

Questions to ask at the first meeting

  1. Which business returns do you prepare in-house, and which do you refer out?
  2. Who does my monthly bookkeeping, and who reviews it before the return is prepared?
  3. Is payroll included, and do you file the quarterly and year-end payroll forms?
  4. How do we meet between filing seasons to plan for estimated payments or an entity change?
  5. If I receive an IRS or SCDOR notice, who responds, and are they authorized to represent me?

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to use one firm for bookkeeping and taxes?

For most small businesses it saves time and reduces errors, because the figures on the return come straight from books the same office already reconciled. It is not required. If you keep separate providers, have your bookkeeper deliver a year-end package with reconciled statements, a fixed asset list and payroll totals so your preparer is not rebuilding the numbers.

Which tax return does my small business file?

It depends on the entity. A single-member LLC or sole proprietor usually reports on Schedule C with the owner's personal return, a multi-member LLC generally files a partnership return, and an S corporation files Form 1120-S. South Carolina has its own business returns and deadlines. Our business structures explainer walks through the options before you choose.

When should a small business talk to a tax preparer?

Before year-end, not after. Planning conversations in the fall can still change the outcome, for example by timing equipment purchases, adjusting estimated payments or reviewing an S corporation election. After December 31, most choices are fixed and the work becomes reporting. Our year-end tax planning checklist covers what to review.

Can a bookkeeping and tax firm handle IRS notices?

Many can help you understand a notice, gather records and file missing or corrected returns. Representing you before the IRS or SCDOR is different: it requires an authorized representative such as a CPA, enrolled agent or attorney. At Elite Pro-Tax, representation is handled by an independent licensed CPA the firm partners with. See what to do about an IRS notice.
