Best Bookkeeping Services in Greenville (2026)

Six Greenville-area firms that keep small business books, what each one says it offers, and how to pick the right fit for your records.

Published by Elite Pro-Tax & Financial Services, which lists itself first. The other firms did not pay to appear and have no business relationship with us. They are described from their own websites; confirm services and details with each firm directly.

Good bookkeeping is quiet. Transactions get categorized, bank and card accounts get reconciled every month, and when tax season arrives the numbers your preparer needs are already there. Bad bookkeeping is loud, usually in March, when a year of receipts has to be rebuilt from bank statements.

This list covers firms in and around Greenville that offer bookkeeping to small businesses. Some are CPA firms that also do audits and tax work; others focus on day-to-day records and payroll. Each entry describes what the firm says on its own website. If you are still deciding whether to hire help at all, start with our post on the signs you need a bookkeeper.

How we put this list together

We looked for firms that are based in or serve the Greenville area, that list bookkeeping as a service on their own site, and that describe what the work includes. When you compare them, these are the questions that matter most:

  • Frequency: will they reconcile monthly, or only catch up once a year? Our post on monthly vs quarterly bookkeeping explains the trade-off.
  • Deliverables: do you get a profit and loss statement and balance sheet each period, or just a reconciled ledger?
  • Catch-up work: can they clean up months or years of neglected books before starting a monthly routine?
  • Software: do they work in the program you already use, and will they set it up or train your staff?
  • Connection to tax and payroll: are books, payroll filings and the tax return handled in one place or split between providers?

What to hand a new bookkeeper

The first month with any bookkeeper goes faster when you arrive organized. Have these ready:

  • Read-only access to, or statements for, every business bank, card and loan account
  • Login access to your accounting software, or last year's return and any prior financial statements if you are starting fresh
  • Payroll reports and quarterly filings if you have employees
  • A list of vendors and contractors you pay, with W-9s on file
  • Any sales tax registrations and past returns

If the books are months behind, ask for a catch-up quote before the monthly engagement starts. Cleaning up the past and maintaining the present are different jobs and are often priced separately.

In-house, outsourced, or a mix

Many small businesses split the work: an owner or office manager enters invoices and bills, and an outside firm reconciles, reviews and produces statements. Others hand over everything. Neither is wrong. Our post on outsourced vs in-house bookkeeping walks through the costs and risks of each. Whatever you choose, make sure someone reconciles every account every month; that one habit catches most errors before they reach a tax return.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a small business have its books reconciled?

Monthly is the standard most firms recommend. Reconciling each bank and card account every month catches missing transactions, duplicate charges and miscategorized expenses while they are still easy to trace. Quarterly can work for very low-volume businesses, but annual catch-up tends to be slower and less accurate. See monthly vs quarterly bookkeeping for a fuller comparison.

What is catch-up bookkeeping?

Catch-up bookkeeping means bringing records current when months or years have gone unrecorded or unreconciled. The bookkeeper works from bank and card statements, receipts and invoices to categorize transactions and reconcile each account, so a tax return can be prepared from accurate figures. Several firms on this list, including Elite Pro-Tax through its catch-up bookkeeping service, offer it.

Do I need a CPA firm for bookkeeping?

Not necessarily. Bookkeeping, meaning recording and reconciling transactions and producing statements, is done by CPA firms and non-CPA firms alike. A CPA firm becomes necessary when you need attest work such as an audit or review for a lender or licensing agency. Match the provider to what you actually need, and ask who will do the monthly work.

Should my bookkeeper also prepare my tax return?

It is not required, but it removes a hand-off. When the same office keeps the books and prepares the return, year-end adjustments, depreciation and payroll figures line up without a separate review. If you use two providers, ask your bookkeeper to deliver a year-end package your preparer can work from. Our bookkeeping page explains how Elite Pro-Tax connects the two.
