Best Tax Services for Contractors in Upstate SC (2026)

Six Upstate firms that prepare taxes and keep books for contractors, subcontractors and construction companies, with what each one says it offers.

Published by Elite Pro-Tax & Financial Services, which lists itself first. The other firms did not pay to appear and have no business relationship with us. They are described from their own websites; confirm services and details with each firm directly.

Contractors have a tax picture that looks different from a W-2 household. Income arrives by job, not by paycheck. Trucks, trailers and tools wear out fast. Subcontractors need year-end forms, crews need payroll, and quarterly estimated payments are easy to miss in a busy season.

The firms below all serve contractors or construction businesses in the Upstate, based on what their own websites say. They range from a one-office tax and bookkeeping practice to regional CPA firms with dedicated construction teams, so the right fit depends on the size of your business and what you need done.

How we put this list together

We included firms with an office in Greenville, Pickens, Anderson or Spartanburg County whose own website describes tax or accounting work for contractors or the construction industry. We read each firm's site and describe only what it states. What to look for when you compare them:

  • Bookkeeping that tracks income and costs by job, so your return reflects real profit and not a shoebox estimate.
  • Help with Form 1099-NEC for the subcontractors you pay, and with collecting Form W-9 before the first check goes out.
  • Payroll for crews, including state withholding and unemployment insurance filings.
  • Year-round planning for quarterly estimated payments and for big purchases like trucks and equipment.
  • Entity advice when you outgrow a sole proprietorship, including whether an S corporation election makes sense.
  • A way of working that fits your schedule: in-office meetings, a secure portal, or both.

Match the firm to the size of your business

A sole proprietor with a truck and a few subcontractors usually needs clean monthly books, a correct Schedule C, quarterly estimates and help with 1099s. A company with crews, bonding and bank financing may also need payroll, job-cost reporting and reviewed or audited financial statements. Ask each firm which of those it handles itself and which it refers out.

If you are weighing an S corporation, read when to elect S corp status first, and see our self-employed tax services for the basics.

What to bring to a first meeting

  • Last year's federal and SC returns
  • Bank and credit card statements for the business
  • A list of the subcontractors you paid, with their W-9s
  • Purchase paperwork for vehicles and equipment bought this year
  • Mileage logs and any payroll reports

Our tax prep checklist has the full list.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to send 1099s to my subcontractors?

If you pay a non-employee for services in the course of your business, you generally file Form 1099-NEC once your payments to that person reach the IRS reporting threshold. For payments made after 2025 that threshold is $2,000 for the calendar year, up from $600 before. Payments to corporations are generally exempt, which is why collecting a W-9 before the first payment matters. See employee vs. contractor for classification questions.

Can I deduct a work truck in the year I buy it?

Often, yes. Section 179 expensing and bonus depreciation can let a business deduct much or all of the cost of qualifying equipment and vehicles in the year they are placed in service, and 100% bonus depreciation applies to qualified property acquired after January 19, 2025. Vehicle limits and business-use rules apply, so the answer depends on the vehicle and how you use it. Our contractor deductions list covers the details.

Should a contractor pay quarterly estimated taxes?

Usually. Self-employed contractors have no employer withholding, so the IRS and SCDOR expect tax to be paid during the year through estimated payments. Missing them can mean an underpayment penalty even if you pay in full in April. Our quarterly estimated taxes guide and quarterly tax calculator show how the payments work.

Do I need a CPA, or will a tax preparer do?

It depends on the work. Any paid preparer can prepare and file your returns. If a bank, bonding company or general contractor asks for reviewed or audited financial statements, you need a licensed CPA firm for that work. Several firms on this list are CPA firms. For help choosing, see how to choose a tax preparer in Greenville.
