Best Tax Preparation Services in Greenville, SC (2026)

Six Greenville-area firms that prepare individual and business returns, compared by what each one actually offers so you can match the office to your situation.

Published by Elite Pro-Tax & Financial Services, which lists itself first. The other firms did not pay to appear and have no business relationship with us. They are described from their own websites; confirm services and details with each firm directly.

Greenville has no shortage of tax offices, from long-established CPA firms on Haywood Road and Pelham Road to smaller practices that also run your books and payroll. The right choice depends less on a name and more on fit: how complex your return is, whether you own a business, and whether you want help only in spring or all year.

Every firm below is a real, operating office that serves Greenville. We described each one using only what its own website says about its services and location. We did not use prices, star ratings or review counts, because those change and are hard to compare fairly.

If this is your first time hiring a preparer, our list of questions to ask a tax preparer and the longer guide on how to choose a tax preparer in Greenville pair well with this page.

How we put this list together

We looked for firms that prepare returns for Greenville residents and businesses and that clearly list their services online. Within that group, these are the questions that separate one office from another:

  • Scope: individual returns only, or business returns too (partnerships, S corporations, corporations, nonprofits, estates and trusts)?
  • Year-round help: does the firm offer tax planning, bookkeeping or payroll, or only filing season preparation?
  • Tax problems: if an IRS or SCDOR letter arrives, does the firm list notice, audit or collection help, and who handles representation?
  • Credentials: CPAs, enrolled agents and attorneys have unlimited representation rights before the IRS; other paid preparers need a PTIN and have limited rights. Check what the firm states.
  • How you work together: in person, a secure client portal, or both.

What to bring to your first appointment

Whichever firm you pick, the first meeting goes faster with the paperwork in hand. A short list:

  • Photo ID and Social Security cards or ITINs for everyone on the return.
  • Last year's federal and South Carolina returns.
  • Every W-2, 1099 and 1098 you received, plus any IRS or SCDOR letters.
  • For a business or rental: income totals, expense records and mileage logs.
  • Bank details for a direct deposit refund.

Our tax prep checklist has the full version, and the South Carolina tax deadlines post covers when federal and state returns are due.

Preparer or representative: know the difference

Anyone with a Preparer Tax Identification Number can be paid to prepare a federal return. Representing you in an audit, a collection case or an appeal is different. The IRS gives CPAs, enrolled agents and attorneys unlimited representation rights; other preparers can represent only on returns they prepared and signed, and not in collections or appeals. If you already have an open IRS problem, ask each firm who would handle it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a Greenville tax preparer's credentials?

Ask for their PTIN, which every paid federal preparer must have, and ask whether anyone on staff is a CPA, enrolled agent or attorney. The IRS publishes a Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications that you can search by city. For CPAs, the South Carolina Board of Accountancy also offers a license lookup.

Can I work with a Greenville preparer without going to the office?

Many firms now accept documents through secure portals. Elite Pro-Tax, for example, works with clients virtually through a TaxDome portal where you upload documents and e-sign, or in person at its Easley office. Ask any firm how it protects your data and how you will sign the return before it is filed.

Should a small business use the same firm for taxes and bookkeeping?

It often helps. When one office keeps the books and prepares the return, year-end numbers are already reconciled and questions get answered faster. If you choose separate providers, make sure your bookkeeper delivers clean financial statements before your preparer needs them. Our post on outsourced vs in-house bookkeeping walks through the tradeoffs.

What if I get an IRS letter after my return is filed?

Read it the day it arrives and note the response deadline. Many letters ask for a document or propose a change you can agree with or dispute. Bring it to your preparer, and if the matter needs representation, confirm that a CPA, enrolled agent or attorney will handle it. Our guide on what to do with an IRS notice has the steps.
